King had resigned when MacArthur had cancelled Operation Olympic, an attack on the southern island of Kyushu, and gone straight to Honshu. I choose the group reporter randomly: the person wearing the most blue that day, for example. While researching The Devil in the Marshalsea [Mariner Books, $15.95] I spent half my time marvelling at how strange things were in 1720s London and the other half laughing at how familiar it all sounded.

The reason why I think of 2 different genres is because fiction and non-fiction are so different … of fiction and non-fiction text. However, "New Historicism" continues to exercise a major influence in the humanities and in the extended conception of literary studies. "Ethnic Studies," sometimes referred to as "Minority Studies," has an obvious historical relationship with "Postcolonial Criticism" in that Euro-American imperialism and colonization in the last four centuries, whether external (empire) or internal (slavery) has been directed at recognizable ethnic groups: African and African-American, Chinese, the subaltern peoples of India, Irish, Latino, Native American, and Philipino, among others. "Ethnic Studies" concerns itself generally with art and literature produced by identifiable ethnic groups either marginalized or in a subordinate position to a dominant culture. "Postcolonial Criticism" investigates the relationships between colonizers and colonized in the period post-colonization.

Abelard & Heloise: Real life scholars of 12th-century Paris, Peter Abelard and his student, Heloise, had a torrid affair. This wonderful novel is set on the Titanic. It is a short, pitch-perfect depiction of the tragedy, so convincing and beautifully paced... and as a bonus doesn't have Celine Dion warbling all over it. Lexi finally realises her dream of buying Hollingsworth but her obsession with the house leaves her marriage in tatters.

The Kalinga mambayu is a rice-pounding song. Avoid supernatural or unbelievable methods of solving the case. To oversimplify, words are always at a distance from what they signify and, to make matters worse, must be described by using other words. Series follows the lives of several pioneer families of the Western American frontier (California) mid-19th century. Loneliness overwhelms him, but the woman who handles the neighboring farm brilliantly draws him like a moth to flame.

We will think about which genre or style of historical fiction each book inhabits. At first, things look all pieced together, but after a while, you don’t even notice the stitched-up spots everywhere; they just look all of a piece. In the 1890's every pioneer writing about his adventures in early California had "recollections" of Murrieta and his nonexistent, fearsome scar, the disfigurement invented by "Joaquin" Miller.

You might even say it’s an historical endeavor. (Oh, sigh. It’ s due out in March next year so I really need to get cracking on it!! A flowering of lyric poetry in the reign of Elizabeth comes with such writers as Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586), Edmund Spenser (1552-1599), Sir Walter Ralegh (1552-1618), Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) and William Shakespeare (1564-1616).
