Observant Jews must annually resolve conflicts resulting from their concurrent observance of the High Holidays and school or work responsibilities. Many do not affiliate with any particular branch, and may then be left out of census reports. Traditionally, the fast day has been considered the most solemn of the Jewish holy days, a time which God determines whether one will live or die in the coming year. Compare Gregorian calendar dates with the Jewish calendar. Note: it is permissible to use grape juice as substitute for wine, provided that the grape juice meets religious dietary (i.e. kosher) standards.
